Françoise Amable d’Aubigné

Biography

Françoise Amable d’Aubigné (1684-1739), daughter of Charles, Count d’Aubigné, and Geneviève Piètre, was the only niece of Madame de Maintenon. She was brought up by her aunt as if she were her own daughter, and was reputed to be a “good girl, well educated and full of religion”.

At the age of 14, Madame de Maintenon found her a distinguished suitor for her marriage, Adrien-Maurice Duke d’Ayen then Duke de Noailles. Their wedding took place on 30 March 1698 in Versailles, and Françoise Amable received the Château de Maintenon as a dowry gift from her aunt.

They had six children.
