André le Nôtre is one of France’s most well known landscape gardeners. In 1637, he became the official gardener of the Tuileries. In 1643, his father, also a gardener, appointed him draughtsman of plans and terraces for the King. His work represents the best example of the French formal garden style (also known as gardens à la française), with a geometric layout, vast perspectives, extensive use of lakes and water features, terraces, borders or parterres with decorative designs, statues, etc.
